Are electric scooters allowed at British Columbia Institute of Technology?

Please note, it may be a better reference to check the rules of your city / state first here.

Electric scooters, also known as e-scooters, are becoming an increasingly popular mode of transportation in urban areas. The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) recognizes the importance of sustainable and convenient travel options for its students, faculty, and staff.

At BCIT, the use of electric scooters is generally permitted on campus, but there are specific rules and guidelines that must be followed to ensure the safety of all campus users. Riders are expected to adhere to the same regulations that govern bicycles and other small vehicles on campus. These regulations typically include:

- Riding in designated areas: E-scooters should be used on pathways and roads where bicycles are allowed. Riding on pedestrian walkways and inside buildings is usually prohibited.
- Speed limits: Electric scooters should be operated at speeds that are safe for the conditions and respectful of the campus community. High-speed riding that could endanger pedestrians or riders is discouraged.
- Parking: Riders should park their electric scooters in designated areas, ensuring they do not block pathways, building entrances, or accessibility ramps.

E-scooter users should also follow any additional local, provincial, or campus-specific regulations regarding the use of electric scooters, including wearing appropriate safety gear, such as helmets, and adhering to rules related to proper lighting and visibility.

It is recommended that anyone looking to use an electric scooter at BCIT consult the latest policies found on the BCIT website or contact BCIT Security for up-to-date information on electric scooter usage on campus. Policies may evolve over time in response to changes in regulations, safety concerns, or the adoption of new mobility solutions.
