Are electric scooters allowed at University of Michigan?

Please note, it may be a better reference to check the rules of your city / state first here.

Electric scooters have become a popular mode of transportation at many universities across the United States, including the University of Michigan. At the University of Michigan, electric scooters are permitted, but their use is subject to specific rules and regulations designed to ensure safety and minimize disruptions.

Riders are expected to adhere to the same rules that apply to bicycles. This means that electric scooters must be ridden on the road or in designated bike lanes, not on sidewalks. Riding on sidewalks can create hazards for pedestrians, particularly in high-traffic areas of campus. Additionally, riders are required to follow all traffic laws, including traffic signals and stop signs.

The university also restricts the parking of electric scooters to avoid cluttering pathways and access points. Scooters should be parked at bike racks or in other designated areas rather than being left haphazardly around campus facilities, which could impede pedestrian traffic or accessibility.

The use of helmets while riding electric scooters is highly recommended for safety reasons, although Michigan state law does not require helmets for scooter riders over the age of 18. Nonetheless, safety campaigns on campus often encourage the use of helmets to reduce the risk of head injuries in case of accidents.

The University of Michigan has also collaborated with electric scooter sharing companies, which sometimes offer services on and around campus. These partnerships aim to integrate scooters into the university's transportation framework responsibly and sustainably.

Users should stay updated with any changes to policies or additional guidelines that may be implemented by the university to regulate the use of electric scooters on campus. These rules are subject to change, so it's important for users to remain informed on the latest regulations to ensure compliance and maintain a safe and harmonious campus environment.
