Charging Public Electric Scooters: The Process Explained

Electric scooters have become an increasingly popular mode of transportation in recent years, providing a convenient and eco-friendly way for people to get around urban environments. These public electric scooters, often available in popular cities through various companies, rely on a charging process to stay operational for their users. So, how exactly do public electric scooters charge?

The Charging Process of Public Electric Scooters

  1. Collection: The charging process begins with the collection of scooters that require charging. These scooters typically have GPS systems in place that enable the company to locate and monitor the scooter's battery level. When a scooter's battery is low, it will show up on an app that contract workers, known as 'chargers' or 'juicers,' will use to locate and collect the scooter.

  2. Charging: Once a scooter is collected by a charger or juicer, they will transport it to their home or designated charging location. Here, they will connect the scooter to a charger that has been provided by the scooter company, typically using a standard 110 Volt outlet. Charging can take anywhere from 3-5 hours, depending on the battery life of the specific model.

  3. Deployment: After the scooter has reached full charge, the charger or juicer will return the scooter to a designated drop-off point in the city. These areas are usually high-traffic zones, making it easier for users to locate and use the scooters.

  4. Verification: Once a scooter has been redeployed at a designated location, the charger or juicer will take a photo of it and submit it through the app. This process verifies that the scooter has been properly charged and is ready for use.

Some electric scooter companies also utilize swappable battery systems. In this scenario, workers replace depleted batteries with freshly charged ones, minimizing both downtime and the need for transporting the scooter.

The charging process ensures that public electric scooters remain readily available for usage throughout the day. With advances in technology and charging infrastructure, these eco-friendly transportation alternatives are likely to become even more accessible and efficient in the future.
