Electric Scooter Laws by State: Where are E-scooters Allowed?

With the growing popularity of electric scooters as a convenient and eco-friendly mode of transportation, it has become essential to understand the laws and regulations surrounding their use across the United States. While electric scooter laws may vary from state to state, some general guidelines can help determine where e-scooters are allowed.

In most states, electric scooters are classified as Personal Mobility Devices, similar to bicycles and electric bicycles. In most cases, they are allowed on roads with a speed limit of 25 mph or less, in bike lanes, and on sidewalks. However, specific rules and regulations around electric scooter usage can vary from state to state.

Here are some examples of how different states approach electric scooter laws:

California: In California, electric scooters are allowed on roads, bike lanes, and sidewalks unless prohibited by local laws. Scooter riders must be at least 15 years old and possess a valid driver's license or learner's permit. Helmets are required for riders under the age of 18.

Texas: In Texas, electric scooters are allowed on roads with a speed limit of 35 mph or less, as well as in bike lanes and on sidewalks. There are no age or helmet requirements in Texas, although local ordinances may have additional regulations.

New York: Until recently, electric scooters were illegal in New York. However, they were legalized in 2020, allowing them on roads with a speed limit of 30 mph or less and in bike lanes. The use of electric scooters on sidewalks is prohibited, and riders must be 16 years old or older. A helmet is recommended but not required.

Florida: In Florida, electric scooters are allowed on roads, bike lanes, and sidewalks. There is no age requirement for riders, but a helmet is required for riders under the age of 16.

To safely and responsibly ride an electric scooter, adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. Follow all traffic laws and signals.

  2. Yield to pedestrians.

  3. Wear a helmet and other safety gear, when possible.

  4. Stay within the designated speed limit.

  5. Park your scooter responsibly and without obstructing sidewalks, ramps, or public spaces.

As electric scooters' popularity continues to climb, we can expect further regulations and information on where e-scooters are allowed to emerge. Stay informed, ride safely, and enjoy the convenience of this increasingly popular transportation option.
