Electric Scooter Legal Cities: A Comprehensive Guide

With the rise in popularity of electric scooters, many individuals are left wondering where these eco-friendly devices are legal for use. Electric scooters offer individuals an efficient and enjoyable method of transportation that can help reduce local traffic and greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, many cities are reconsidering their laws and regulations regarding the use of these devices on public streets and sidewalks. This article will provide an overview of some major cities in the United States and their current laws regarding electric scooters.

  1. San Francisco, California - Recently, San Francisco has embraced electric scooters by setting up permitted scooter share programs like Lime and Bird. These scooters can be used on streets with speed limits up to 25 mph and not on sidewalks.

  2. Los Angeles, California - Another city with a scooter share program, Los Angeles also permits electric scooters on streets with speed limits up to 25 mph, as long as riders stay in designated bike lanes and not on sidewalks.

  3. Portland, Oregon - E-scooters in Portland can be used on streets and in bike lanes, but not on sidewalks or in city parks. Helmet usage is encouraged but not required.

  1. Denver, Colorado - Denver permits the use of e-scooters on sidewalks and bike lanes, but not on streets with a speed limit above 30 mph. Helmets are strongly encouraged, but not mandatory.

  2. Austin, Texas - Electric scooters are allowed on streets with speed limits up to 35 mph, in bike lanes, and on sidewalks that are not in a business district. Helmet usage is encouraged but not required.

  3. New York City, NY - Electric scooters are now legal in New York City as long as they meet certain requirements. They can be used on streets and in bike lanes, but not on sidewalks or in city parks.

  1. Chicago, Illinois - Chicago recently launched a scooter share pilot program, allowing electric scooters on streets with speed limits up to 35 mph, in bike lanes and on sidewalks only if local laws permit.

It's important to note that laws and regulations may change or vary, and some cities in the United States still have not fully adapted to allow electric scooter usage. Be sure to check your local city laws before riding an electric scooter, and always practice safe riding habits.
