Electric Scooters in Illinois: Do You Need a Driver's License?
With the increasing popularity of electric scooters as an eco-friendly, convenient, and cost-effective mode of transportation, many people are asking: what power electric scooter do you not need a driver's license to ride in Illinois? Before you hop on your new e-scooter, it's essential to understand the state's requirements and regulations. The Illinois Vehicle Code categorizes electric scooters (e-scooters) as motor-driven cycles. According to Illinois law, if the e-scooter's motor is not more than 1.5 brake horsepower (BHP) and it cannot exceed speeds of 30 miles per hour on a flat surface, then it is considered a low-speed electric scooter that does not require a license to operate. However, riders must be at least 16 years old and follow all applicable traffic laws and rules on the road. Additionally, these scooters are not allowed on sidewalks and must be driven on roads with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or lower. If the scooter's motor is more than 1.5 BHP and can exceed 30 miles per hour, it is considered a motor-driven cycle and requires the operator to have a valid driver's license with a Class L or Class M endorsement. Regardless of the scooter's power, it's important to follow local laws and regulations on helmet usage and nighttime operation to ensure both the rider's safety and the safety of others on the road.
