The Real Cost of Fully Charging an Electric Scooter: Uncovering the Truth

If you're considering making the switch from a gas-powered vehicle to an electric scooter, you're probably wondering about the cost. One of the biggest benefits of owning an electric scooter is the significant savings in fuel costs, but just how much does it cost to fully charge an electric scooter?

Let's dive into the numbers:

The exact cost will vary based on your location, the scooter model, its battery size, and the rate you pay for electricity. Based on data from the US Energy Information Administration, the average cost of residential electricity in the United States is 13.31 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

To find out how much it'll cost you to fully charge your electric scooter, you'll need to determine its battery size, which is typically represented in watt-hours (Wh). Most electric scooters have batteries ranging from 250Wh to 500Wh.

Here's an example of calculating the charging cost for an electric scooter with a 300Wh battery:

  1. Convert the battery capacity to kilowatt-hours by dividing the capacity in watt-hours by 1,000. In this example, 300Wh ÷ 1,000 = 0.30 kWh.
  2. Multiply the battery capacity in kWh by your local electricity rate. Using the average rate of 13.31 cents per kWh: 0.30 kWh × $0.1331 = $0.03993.

From this calculation, it costs roughly 4 cents to fully charge an electric scooter with a 300Wh battery. Of course, the actual cost may be slightly higher due to factors like charging efficiency and peaks in electricity demand. However, these costs remain far lower than fueling a gas-powered vehicle.

Keep in mind that some electric scooters also offer charging options at public charging stations, where rates can differ from residential electricity rates.
