Understanding Electric Bike Speed: How Fast Can You Go?

European regulations tend to be a bit different, with a typical speed limit for pedal-assist e-bikes set at 25 km/h (15.5 mph). Beyond this speed, the electric assist cuts out, and you would have to pedal just like on a conventional bicycle to go faster.

The motor power of an e-bike directly correlates with its potential for speed. In both the US and Europe, the power is typically limited to 250 watts for street-legal e-bikes. However, off-road e-bikes can have motors with much higher power outputs.

It’s also worth noting that while these speeds are the legal limits, the actual speed an e-bike can achieve may be lower and is affected by factors like rider weight, terrain, wind resistance, tire type and pressure, and battery charge level. Higher-end models may offer more sophisticated technology that can maintain higher speeds more efficiently.
