Are Electric Scooters Legal in Austin?
Updated on December 1st, 2023
In Austin, riders of electric scooters and bicycles have the same rights and must follow the same rules as motor vehicle drivers, according to the Texas state transportation code and City of Austin code. Safety is paramount, so riders should ensure they are visible at night with a white front light and a rear red light or reflector, obey all traffic signals and signage, use hand signals when turning, and be cautious to not impede pedestrian paths. Scooters and bikes should not be parked in a way that obstructs traffic or damages property, and in the event of an accident involving injury or property damage, riders are expected to provide assistance and exchange contact information.

Bicyclists and riders of micromobility (scooters, skateboards, or other compact devices designed for personal mobility) have the rights and are subject to all of the duties and regulations applicable to drivers of motor vehicles. By obeying the laws and riding predictably, you make it easier for everyone to share the road.
