Bridgeport regulates electric scooters under Connecticut state law, which has been in effect since 2019 with updates in 2025.
2025 Legislative Updates: Connecticut created the category of "electric scooter" for two- or three-wheeled devices weighing 100 pounds or less, with handlebars, designed for upright or seated position, with maximum speed of 20 mph. This expands previous definitions.
Speed and Operation: Electric scooters use an electric motor that does not exceed 20 mph. Cannot ride on sidewalks. Also prohibited on highways, expressways, and streets with speed limits over 20 mph.
Helmet Requirements: Anyone under 18 must wear a helmet. Failure to comply could result in a fine of at least $90.
Traffic Rules: Electric scooters must be ridden with traffic, on the right side of the road at all times, staying as close to the right as possible while maintaining safety. Must use the road or designated bicycle lanes.
No Registration Required: Scooters do not need to be registered with DMV. Electric scooters are treated like bicycles under law and do not require a driver's license.
Safety Note: Bridgeport has experienced scooter-related accidents resulting in major injuries, highlighting the importance of following safety regulations.
