Step-by-Step Guide to Repairing Electric Bike Brakes

Maintaining the brakes on your electric bike (e-bike) is essential for ensuring a safe and enjoyable ride. Many e-bikes come equipped with either mechanical disc brakes or hydraulic disc brakes. Before proceeding with any brake repairs, ensure your e-bike is powered off and securely stabilized. We'll take you through the common steps for both types of brake systems, offering a comprehensive solution to your e-bike braking woes.

For mechanical disc brakes:

  1. Inspect the brake pads for wear and replace them if necessary. Brake pads typically have wear indicators that show when they need to be replaced.

  2. Adjust the brake cable tension by loosening the adjustment barrel, pulling more cable through if the brakes are too loose, or releasing some if they are too tight.

  3. Center the brake caliper if the disc is rubbing by loosening the caliper mounting bolts and realigning the caliper so that it's equidistant from the disc on both sides.

  4. Check the brake lever and cable for any signs of damage or corrosion and replace if needed to ensure smooth operation.

For hydraulic disc brakes:

  1. Check the hydraulic fluid levels and top up with the correct type of fluid if required. Never mix different types of hydraulic fluids as it can compromise brake performance.

  2. If the brakes feel spongy, bleed the brake lines to remove any air bubbles that can affect braking power.
