Ensuring your electric bike's brakes are properly adjusted is crucial for safe and reliable riding. Given the additional speed and weight associated with electric bikes, it's even more important to maintain them well. Below, we'll dive into a comprehensive guide on how to adjust brakes on your electric bike, so you can keep riding with confidence.
First, identify what type of brakes your electric bike has. The two most common types are mechanical disc brakes and hydraulic disc brakes. Each type requires a different approach when adjusting.
For mechanical disc brakes:
- Begin by checking the brake pads for wear. If they are significantly worn out, replace them before making other adjustments.
- Use an Allen key to loosen the bolts that secure the brake caliper to the mounting post.
- Squeeze the brake lever to hold the brake pads against the disc, then retighten the bolts. This aligns the caliper to the disc.
- Spin the wheel to check for rubbing. If necessary, fine-tune by adjusting the pads' position with the caliper adjustment screws.
- Check the cable tension. If the brake lever has too much travel before the brakes engage, turn the barrel adjuster at the lever or caliper to tighten the cable.
For hydraulic disc brakes:
- Hydraulic brakes are self-adjusting to some extent. If the lever feels spongy, it
