Find the Right Charger for Your Electric Scooter

A charger is matched on three things: output voltage, connector type, and a current rating your scooter can accept. Levy stocks chargers for Levy, the Segway Ninebot Max series and Okai fleet scooters. Every output and connector below comes off the product page, not off a compatibility chart.

Or match by voltage

If you have no idea what your scooter is, the charger itself will tell you. Read the output on the old brick and match it exactly.

Why the charger’s number is higher than the battery’s. A lithium pack is described by its nominal voltage — roughly 3.6V per cell, times the number of cells in series. A full lithium cell is about 4.2V. So a “36V” pack is ten cells and needs 42V to fill, a “48V” pack is thirteen cells and needs about 54.6V, and a “52V” pack is fourteen cells and needs about 58.8V. That mismatch between the two labels is normal and expected.

  • Battery labelled 36V → charger labelled 42V
  • Battery labelled 48V → charger labelled 54.6V
  • Battery labelled 52V → charger labelled 58.8V

Amperage is the second number and it sets speed, not compatibility. Going up in amps is a question for your scooter’s manufacturer.

Connector types

Two chargers can share an output and still be the wrong part, because the plug will not seat. The connectors Levy publishes specs for:

Single-pin barrel (Levy Light, Levy Plus)5.5 mm outer diameter, 2.1 mm inner diameter
3-prong inline (36V adapter)8 mm (0.31 in) plug diameter
Okai ES400Barrel jack or HiGo — two separate variants, check your scooter
Segway Ninebot MaxSegway proprietary port — buy the Max-specific charger

If a charger needs an adapter to fit your port, it is the wrong charger. Adapting the connector defeats the one physical check that stops a mismatched charger being plugged in.

Safety: the wrong charger is the wrong place to save money

A charger is a device whose entire job is to push current into a lithium pack. When the charger and the pack are not designed for each other, the failure mode is a fire, not a dead battery. Buy a charger that names your scooter model on its own product page, look for a recognised safety certification mark on the brick itself, and never bridge a connector mismatch with an adapter.

Levy’s battery packs are UL 2271 certified and sealed in a fireproof metal casing. That protects you from a pack fault. It does not protect you from an uncertified charger you plugged into it.

The Levy charger includes both the wall adapter and the cord to the scooter, so $31.99 is the whole charging system rather than half of it. If only the mains cord is damaged, buy the cord on its own.

Frequently asked questions

What charger does a 36V electric scooter take?

A 42V charger. 36V is the nominal voltage of a ten-cell lithium pack; each cell tops out at about 4.2 volts, so a full pack sits at 42V and the charger has to reach that to fill it. This catches people out constantly: a charger sold as "36V" is usually the wrong thing for a scooter whose battery is labelled 36V.

What connector does the Levy charger use?

A single-pin barrel connector with a 5.5 mm outer diameter and a 2.1 mm inner diameter, on a 42V 2A brick. Levy also sells a 42V 2A adapter with a 3-prong inline connector and an 8 mm plug diameter, for 36V scooters that use that style of port.

How long should charging take?

It depends on the pack size and the charger amperage, not on the brand. A larger pack on the same charger takes proportionally longer, and doubling the amperage roughly halves the time if the scooter is rated to accept it. If your charge time has crept up a lot over a year or two of ownership, that is usually the battery ageing rather than the charger failing.

Can I leave my scooter on charge overnight?

We would rather you did not. A healthy charger and battery management system will stop when the pack is full, but the reason to unplug is the failure case, not the normal case. Charge while you are awake and in the building, on a hard surface, away from the exit route.

Which scooter brands does Levy stock chargers for?

Levy, Segway Ninebot Max, and Okai fleet scooters. That is the complete list. We do not carry chargers for Xiaomi, GoTrax, Hiboy, Turboant, NIU, Apollo, Unagi, Razor, Varla, Kaabo or Dualtron, and we do not publish fitment guesses for scooters we have not tested against.
