Levy Light or Levy Plus: Which Scooter Is Better for New York City?
The best scooter for New York is not necessarily the fastest scooter.
For many riders, portability, range, replacement-part availability and the ability to carry the scooter into an apartment matter more than high-speed performance that cannot legally be used on city streets.
The Levy Light and Levy Plus are both designed as portable commuter scooters, but they serve slightly different riders.

Choose the Levy Light when portability comes first
The Light is the better fit when:
- Your normal trips are relatively short.
- You regularly carry the scooter upstairs.
- You combine riding with transit.
- Storage space is limited.
- Lower weight matters more than maximum battery range.
At 28 pounds, the Light is meaningfully easier to lift than the increasingly common 60- to 100-pound performance scooters sold online.
Choose the Levy Plus when range comes first
The Plus is the better fit when:
- You regularly make longer round trips.
- You want more reserve battery capacity.
- You make several trips before recharging.
- An additional two pounds is not a major concern.
- You want to remain at NYC’s 20 mph device threshold while gaining more range.
The Plus is published at exactly 20 mph—not under 20 mph—so Levy’s marketing should describe it as “at or below the threshold” rather than saying every promoted scooter is under 20.
Both models use removable batteries
A removable battery changes how a scooter fits into city life. The battery may be removed and charged separately, which is useful when the scooter is stored away from an outlet, and it makes future battery replacement far more practical than it is on scooters whose batteries are permanently buried inside the deck or frame.
The Light and Plus batteries are model-specific and are not interchangeable. Buyers should order the exact compatible pack and connector version identified for their scooter.
Both riders must observe the 15 mph operating limit
The Light’s 18 mph capability and the Plus’s 20 mph capability do not change NYC’s riding rule.
NYC DOT prohibits operating e-scooters faster than 15 mph on city streets.
The recommendation
Choose the Levy Light for maximum portability and shorter city trips.
Choose the Levy Plus for greater range with only a modest increase in weight.
Both offer a fundamentally different proposition from the heavy high-speed vehicles currently attracting regulatory scrutiny: lightweight, portable transportation designed for ordinary city use.
